This Coconut Honey Natural Hand Scrub is a wonderful gift for tired, rough hands. The rich coconut oil provides an amazing emollient to soothe skin, while the honey and lemon’s antibacterial properties leave your hands wonderfully clean. And the smell? Well, do your best not to eat it… though with these natural ingredients it wouldn’t hurt if you did!
In fact, coconut oil makes a wonderful oil to cook with, too. It’s shelf-stable and doesn’t go rancid like other oils do, and that’s why it’s perfect in homemade cosmetic mixes like this one. Just be sure your other ingredients are equally pure and your Coconut Honey Natural Hand Scrub will stay good in a cool cupboard for months.
Coconut Honey Natural Hand Scrub
You will need:
(Affiliate links provided for your shopping convenience.)
3 cups granulated white sugar or coconut sugar
1 cup coconut oil, room temperature
3 tablespoons honey
2 tablespoons freshly-squeezed lemon juice
10 drops favorite essential oils (lavender, vanilla, lemon or orange are nice)
Mason jars or other glass containers for storage
1. Whip sugar, oil, honey and lemon juice in a stand mixer until fluffy.
2. Add fragrance if using and mix in for 5 seconds.
3. Spoon into containers, close tightly, and store in a cool, dark place for up to 6 months.
Scoop a quarter-sized amount from the jar and massage into hands. Rubbing into your nails will help soften cuticles, too. Rinse under warm water, rubbing hands together, then pat dry. Use as needed: the oil will leave your skin feeling moist and soft every time.
For extra moisturizing, reapply after rinsing hands then slip on rubber gloves while you’re cleaning or napping. When done, throw the gloves in the washing machine and rinse your hands with warm water.
Although created for hands, this Coconut Honey Hand Scrub also makes a wonderful all-over shower exfoliant. After washing your body, turn off the water and grab a large scoop with your fingers. Apply and rub in a circular direction to loosen dead skin cells then rinse off in warm water. Do be careful, though: since this is oil-based your shower floor may get slippery. To get it clean when your done use my homemade bathroom disinfectant scrub.
I like to treat my feet with this scrub throughout the winter, too. Just soak them in a warm pan of water for 10 minutes or so then apply a marble-sized scoop of Coconut Honey Hand Scrub to each foot. Scrub well, particularly on rough spots like heels and toenail cuticles, then rinse. Slip on a pair of socks afterward and your trapped body heat will continue to help the coconut oil soften your skin for hours.
Don’t forget to make extra to give as gifts to friends, gardeners, and teachers!
