We all get too busy to keep up with housework at times, but there are five things you should clean daily no matter how busy you are. They only take 10 minutes in total, and staying on top of these tasks will help keep your home pest- and odor-free.
Things You Should Clean Daily
1. The Dishes
Dirty dishes attract pests and start to stink. So, either hand-wash or load them into the dishwasher after every meal. Your kitchen will look cleaner, and you’ll find family members are more likely to deal with their own dishes if the sink is empty.
2. Kitchen Counters
Cluttered, dirty countertops make cooking an unpleasant task. Food spills and crumbs attract pests.
Don’t bother moving everything off the counters if you don’t have time or energy for that. Spray messes with a homemade all-purpose spray and wipe them with a microfiber cloth. Toss any trash you find in the process, and put away foodstuff, too.
3. Fresh Carpet Stains
Spills happen, but they don’t have to become permanent stains if you treat them right away. Once a day, look over your carpets and address any new spots. A mixture of dish detergent and warm water gets most fresh stains out.
Dealing with set-in carpet stains obviously takes more time and effort. When you’ve got an afternoon to deal with them, treat old carpet stains with these methods.
4. Kitchen Trash
Leaving food scraps and other kitchen waste to sit overnight breeds household pests and causes odors. If the cost of trash bags holds you back from taking out a half-full bag nightly, remember that $0.20 is a lot cheaper than getting rid of cockroaches or mice. If your concern is reducing plastic in the landfill, switch to biodegradable kitchen trash bags.
Either way, don’t let a trash can filled with food scraps sit rotting in your kitchen overnight.
Toothpaste splatters and stray hairs can make your bathroom look a mess even when it’s not. As for the kitchen sink, it’s dirtier than a toilet.
Give them a simple blast with a homemade disinfecting sink spray or a quick once-over with a cleaning wipe on both every day or, at the very least, go over them with a cleaning wipe.
Adopt a Daily Cleaning Routine
Now, don’t confuse these five quick tasks with actual cleaning. They’re the bare minimum needed to keep your house from getting squalid when you’re super busy.
