For most of us, the holidays are the very best time of year: family gatherings, cookie swaps, shopping, decorating, and elaborate meals. It’s a busy time of year when we welcome the chance to spend time with family and friends celebrating the season of joy and love.
But for those who have hip or knee pain, it’s easy to get sidelined. Traveling to visit distant loved ones is agony when your joints ache, especially if they live in colder climes. The thought of hours in the kitchen decorating sugar cookies with the kids or preparing the Christmas ham is overwhelming when your body can’t take it.
I should know. I’ve spent the last decade dealing with joint pain and watched it increasingly limit my life. I gave up Christmas shopping at the mall, where I’d always enjoyed the festive music and holiday decor, because it was just too physically painful. Driving to see family left me in agony throughout the visit, and for several days after we got home, too. Instead of feeling filled with the holiday spirit I just hurt everywhere.
That kind of pain makes you feel like life is on pause, and it takes you away from the ones you love. Guess what? They miss you!
Pain didn’t just limit me at Christmastime. Cleaning house — something people seem to expect me to do a lot of, since I write a blog about it and all — was, at times, beyond my abilities. Gardening, one of my favorite outdoor activities, was more than I could take.
I am so happy to say that this year, things are finally different. This year, nothing is holding me back. Why’s that? Because I found a doctor who talked to me about solutions, and together we’ve found a course of treatment that works for me.
That’s right: I’m back to shopping at malls, baking hundreds of Christmas cookies, getting together with friends, even cleaning and decorating my home for the holidays. Instead of joint pain pausing my life, I’ve “hit play” and am back to living life and spending time with friends and loved ones again.
It can happen for you, too. Visit TimeToHitPlay.com to find a physician in your area who’ll work with you to find solutions for your hip or knee pain. I did, and I am so glad to have my life back because of it!
