For Day 14 of our 30-day series on how to get an organized and clean home, we’re giving the house a weekly cleaning.
If you’re just joining us, here’s the series introduction with links to previous days’ missions.
This is NOT a Deep-Cleaning
We’ve been cleaning each room after organizing it in this series, so much of the house should already be in pretty good shape.
Today it’s a good idea to go back over those areas lightly to keep them tidy, then take some time to do some advance work in the rooms we haven’t yet covered.
For weekly cleaning, start with the messiest areas and finish with the ones that are easiest to clean. Prioritizing the dirtiest areas ensures you’ve got the energy to tackle the worst spots, so by the time you’re feeling worn out you won’t have much left to do.
In most homes, the messiest to least messy areas are:
- Kids’ rooms
- Family room
- Living room
- Adults’ bedroom
Since we’ve already worked on the first six of these spaces, cleaning shouldn’t be too challenging today. Hooray!
Do Some Advance Work
Since it’s not a challenging day, take this opportunity to do a little advance decluttering. We have to clear off surfaces before we can clean them, so go ahead and set aside anything that doesn’t belong in that room.
You should be throwing away trash when you find it, too!
Use Cleaning Checklists
If you don’t already have a cleaning routine, grab one of my free printable weekly cleaning checklists. Each checklist explains the supplies you’ll need and the steps to clean a room quickly but thoroughly.

Catch up on Laundry
If you have a washer and dryer in your home, it’s a good practice to do at least one load of laundry each day. In reality, many of us try to do that but wind up doing several loads on Cleaning Day, too.
Whatever your laundry routine, do your best to get caught up with it today. We’re going to be organizing and cleaning your dresser and closet this week. That’s much easier to do when you’re not stepping around a pile of dirty clothes!
See You Tomorrow
Be sure to check in tomorrow for our next mission. In the meantime, you’re invited to join our Do Home Better Group on Facebook. We’re a supportive bunch who cheers each other on through this series and other homemaking challenges.
