I’d heard that a dog is man’s best friend but didn’t understand that until I got Mercy, my little French Bulldog. To be honest, I hadn’t planned on getting a dog. I’ve always been a cat person, you see, but my cats aren’t nearly as interested in me as I am in them. Kind of like children when they get older.
Well, a year after my husband passed away, I wanted a companion: someone to go on walks with me. Someone to snuggle with during Netflix marathons. Someone happy to see me even when I’m only gone for a few minutes. That certainly didn’t describe my teenager, but it sure described a puppy.
Picking The Perfect Puppy For Me
I watched our local animal shelters for months but only found large breed dogs who’d need a lot more exercise and yard space than I had to offer. Then I heard about a French Bulldog breeder whose latest litter included a blue carrier Frenchie — a trait which makes the puppy ineligible for show or breeding. That scared off a lot of potential buyers but not me: I just wanted a pal!
Since then, Mercy and I have been inseparable. French Bulldogs are very clingy indoor dogs who want to be around their people constantly — the perfect match for someone who works at home! Plus, they’re cuddly. Oh my goodness, are they cuddly.
She’s made me happy every day for a year now, and I want her to be happy every day, too. So here’s how I show my dog love.
Plenty of Playtime
Even indoor dogs love to play outdoors now and then, and Mercy is no exception. Like many snub-nosed breeds, she can’t tolerate hot temperatures, so we schedule playtime for early mornings. If it’s not raining, you’ll find us playing ball in the backyard every morning to give her the exercise she needs.
When we’ve had our outdoor playtime, we head inside where Mercy seldom leaves my side. Since I’m a true homebody, she gets the near-constant attention she needs along with plenty of belly rubs and games of fetch in the living room, too.
I’m picky about what I feed my family, emphasizing super foods and organic proteins free of antibiotics. I know we feel our best when we fuel ourselves properly, and the same goes for my doggie girl!
Mercy thrives when she eats high-quality dog food free of fillers like corn and soy. That’s why I feel good about giving her Tender & True, the only full line of antibiotic-free, sustainable, and USDA certified organic dog and cat foods. It meets her nutritional requirements, but she also loves the Organic Chicken & Liver flavor, too!
Professional Medical Care
Responsible parenting of any kind means regular visits for medical and dental treatment. I protect Mercy’s health by ensuring that she sees the vet regularly for vaccinations and dental cleanings. I also made a point to have her spayed to protect against cancers so she can enjoy a full, long life.
The vet taught me that French Bulldogs are prone to ear infections, so thanks to that advice I wipe her beautiful big ears daily to keep them clean, too. Fuzzy puppy ears are the best!
Mercy brings so much joy to my life. Naturally, I want the best for her. With plenty of playtimes, proper nutrition, and professional medical care I show Mercy that I love her with the same devotion she shows to me.
