Next time life gives you extra lemons, try one of these clever cleaning hacks instead of letting them go to waste.

1. Deodorize Cutting Boards

Dip half a lemon in salt and scrub. Seal wood boards with a thin coat of mineral oil to protect from future odors.

2. Brighten Dingy Socks

Put half of a lemon and your socks in a boiling quart of water for 10 minutes. Rinse under cold water and launder as usual.

3. Clean Stained Plastic Food Containers

Dip the cut-end of a lemon in salt, then rub it over stains. Leave them in a sunny spot all day, then wash in warm, soapy water.

4. Deodorize your Microwave

Put a few lemon wedges in a deep bowl and fill it halfway in water. Microwave for two minutes and wait two more for the steam to loosen the grime, then wipe.

5. Get Rid of Hard Water Spots

For vases, tea kettles, and faucets; dip a lemon wedge in salt, then scrub. Let the juice sit in place for a couple minutes, then rinse.

6. Get Wine Stains out of Carpeting

Squeeze lemon juice on the stain, then wait for 10 minutes. Use a soapy cloth to blot and let it dry.

7. Clean a Burned Coffee Pot

Add ice, a little salt, and the juice of half a lemon to your coffee pot, then swirl it around. Let it sit for an hour and wash.

8. Eliminate Cooking Odors

Cut a lemon in half and put it cut-side up on the rack of a warm oven with the heat off (after cooking). Leave the oven door slightly open.
